IT World Canada’s Cyber Security Today podcast recently analyzed the findings of the Ponemon Institute’s study, Privacy and Security in a Digital World: A Study of Consumers in the United States. In the episode and accompanying article, host Howard Solomon explains how the findings reveal Americans’ growing concern for their online privacy – and the lack of empowerment they feel to fix it.

The study found that 74% of consumers feel they have no control over the personal information that is collected on them. However, the findings also show the majority (54%) do not consciously limit the personal data they provide to online services. This inaction can have long-lasting effects on consumers’ privacy if it continues.

To guard against today’s digital threats, Solomon references the report’s focus on the importance of creating strong, unique passwords for each online account and of customizing your privacy settings to avoid sharing data you’d rather keep private. Lastly, he explains how vital it is to be careful about the information you provide to social media platforms and thinking twice before giving websites access to your data.
