IDX CEO Tom Kelly Breaks Down the CA Consumer Privacy Act
As featured on KFBK Afternoon News with Kitty O’Neal
Earlier this month, IDX CEO Tom Kelly joined Kitty O’Neal on KFBK Afternoon News to break down what businesses and consumers need to know about the new California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). Kelly explained that this act, which officially began being enforced on July 1, affords California residents major privacy protections as they work, shop, and live online.
Due to CCPA, websites are now required to inform consumers if it intends to collect their personal data through cookies so that the individual can give approval beforehand. If the consumer declines, the company cannot collect their information under penalty of law. The CCPA also gives consumers the right to request that their information be deleted from a company’s database even if they previously gave approval for it to be accessed.
Public officials have ensured constituents that the CCPA will be vigorously enforced and that companies could face major financial penalties if they are found guilty of violating the act. Since the act’s establishment, 19 class-action lawsuits have already been filed, claiming $37 billion in damages from various companies.
Kelly suggests that consumers research CCPA so that they can be fully aware of their data privacy rights – and better protect their personal information from large data-mining companies like Google.
