Hackers use COVID-19 to Find New Phishing Victims

The COVID-19 pandemic has more people working, learning and socializing via online platforms such as Skype, Zoom and Google Meet than ever before. It should come as no surprise that this increase in the use of video-conferencing technology has been followed by an enormous spike in cyberattacks.

Hackers have tailored their scams to fit the current climate by impersonating health organizations, delivering fake coronavirus news and fabricating Zoom meeting notifications. These phishing scams, or cyberattacks where hackers attempt to trick an individual into downloading malware or giving away personal information, take advantage of the anxiety and confusion people are facing in these unprecedented times.

Google’s Threat Analysis Team has blocked 18 million COVID-19 themed malware emails a day since April.

The threat of phishing scams is widespread and serious. In the last 3 weeks alone, 1,700 Zoom-related domains have been registered. Of these, 4% have been deemed potentially malicious. Meanwhile, Google’s Threat Analysis Team has blocked 18 million COVID-19 themed malware emails a day since April, and IDX has seen a 50% increase in members reporting being targeted by scams and phishing attacks since working from home.

Despite the bleak analysis, president and CEO of IDX Tom Kelly recently shared in Security Magazine that many of these attacks can be avoided if technology users are educated on the tactics that hackers employ to steal their information.

To best protect your privacy from COVID-19 related phishing attacks, Tom recommends cautiously examining emails before opening, communicating with coworkers and peers when concerned about potential digital threats and never downloading suspicious files.

Today’s constant threat of cyberattacks may be the new normal, but vigilance and awareness can help protect your information from cybercriminals.
