Google’s New Privacy Protection Features Don’t Change a Flawed Business Model
In short, Google’s new privacy features will allow users to auto-delete Google Map searches and YouTube history, as well as manually delete Google Assistant commands. While these features are a concession to critics who have demanded the company address privacy and security concerns, they ultimately don’t change the fact that Google’s business model – like many other companies that profit from advertising revenue – is still reliant on exploiting users’ privacy. In fact, in 2018 70.7 percent of Google’s revenue came from advertising through Google properties. Their revenue streams essentially function around utilization of your personal data and the “detailed profiles” it builds on each of us. For better or for worse, the profiles are now more comprehensive than ever before.
