IDX's CEO Tom Kelly Discuss How Health Agencies are Gathering Consumer Data in Security Magazine

The coronavirus pandemic continues to pose a serious health challenge to our nation. And to track and fight COVID-19, health providers and the government are gathering more health data than ever before – and this increased data collection presents significant risks for consumers' privacy.

Tom Kelly, President and CEO of IDX, recently pointed out in Security Magazine, that the personal data that governments and health providers collect is far from secure. In fact, 83% of healthcare devices present significant cybersecurity vulnerabilities and health organizations are prime targets for cyberattacks. On top of this, enhanced data collection compromises data privacy since most health data is not protected by HIPAA regulations.

To combat this alarming finding, Kelly recommends Americans be extremely cautious of new apps, devices or web services that capitalize on coronavirus anxiety. And since it's impossible to know all the ways our data is being collected or shared, he urges the need for personal data security services and data protection technology to keep personal data safe from cybercrime.
