Answers from Our Care Team: What Should I Do If My Information Is Part of a Breach?
Summary: Part 4 in our "Answers from Our Care Team" Series – The IDX Care Team is here to provide answers to some of the most commonly asked questions from IDX members. In this article: What to do if you receive a notice from a company or organization that your personal information has been involved in a data breach.
If you receive a legitimate letter from any organization (such as a financial institution, retailer, or government agency) notifying you that your personal information has been involved in a data breach, read it carefully to determine which pieces of your information were compromised (things like your email address or credit card number), and what the organization recommends you do as a next step.
Often the breached organization will offer free identity monitoring services for a specified period of time, through a third-party provider. Before you sign up for this service, be sure to research the provider’s reputation and reviews.
Beyond signing up for identity monitoring if available, refer to this article for a checklist of suggested next steps, based on the type of information that was compromised.
If the breached organization is not offering complimentary identity monitoring services, consider membership in IDX. You’ll find a choice of plans at reasonable prices, all designed to help protect your privacy and identity, and to assist you in recovering your identity should you become a victim of fraud.
