IDX's President and CEO, Tom Kelly, recently shared the unique privacy concerns of older consumers with AARP Now, AARP’s mobile app for members. The article highlighted the recent Ponemon research that shows that older consumers worry more about online advertisers misusing their personal data than younger Americans.

According to the study, Americans 55 and older tend to be more worried about being tracked by online advertisers than their younger counterparts. In fact, the study found that 78 percent of older Americans think that advertisers should not be able to use the content of their online messaging and conversations to target them with ads, while only 67 percent of consumers ages 36 to 55 and 64 percent of consumers ages 18 to 35 said the same. Similarly, 75 percent of older Americans have grown more concerned for their personal data over the past three years, compared to 69 percent of individuals ages 36 to 55 and 65 percent of individuals ages 18 to 35.

Kelly explained that since Americans 55 and older grew up before the internet, during a time when they had more control over their privacy, they likely have a healthy distrust of advertisers and bad actors who may seek to threaten their privacy.
