In the interview, Kelly explained that free apps on your phone generally come with a catch: It tracks what you’re doing when using the app. In every iPhone there is an IDFA (Identifier for Advertisers). This IDFA alerts the company who owns the app when the user takes action on the app. This stream of data is communicated back to the company who then presents the user with advertisements fitting their tracked actions on the app.

Recently, Apple tried to give users the ability to opt-in or out of the IDFA in their new iOS14 mobile operating system, but Facebook pushed back citing a “disruption” to their revenue model, so Apple backed down.

Tom also gave a sneak peek into their forthcoming privacy product and shared tips for consumers to safeguard their personal information in today’s digital age.

Parting words included for users to be careful about how much personal information they post on social media, to always check the terms of service, and for users to secure devices using passwords, two-factor authentication, and privacy settings on their phone.
